The Posse Foundation gave out more than 300 scholarships this year to students from urban New York schools, but its winners weren’t always the same students who might appeal to college admissions officers, reports The New York Times.
The 17-year-old New York charity looks beyond SAT scores to other factors that help students succeed in college: a strong work ethic, leadership potential, and pride.
Students picked as Posse scholars received full scholarships to one of 23 colleges and universities that participate in the program, among them Pomona and Bryn Mawr Colleges. For the participating colleges, the program gives an opportunity to increase the diversity on their campuses.
