CHARITY FRAUD
February 16, 2006
Eight people have been arrested for their suspected involvement in a scheme to sell donated cars abroad through a bogus charity, Global Human Services, in Glendale, Calif., reports the Los Angeles Times. The suspects, all Armenian and Russian nationals, allegedly gave their vehicles to the charity, then reported them stolen and collected on insurance policies. The charity then transported the cars—about $5-million worth over the past two years—for sale abroad. The people who were arrested did not comment in the article.
