Charity Helps Poor County Reduce Teen Pregnancy
July 28, 2006
Bamberg County, an impoverished, rural area in South Carolina, has been able to greatly reduce teen-pregnancy rates thanks in part to a long-running nonprofit program, the Denmark-Olar Teen Life Center, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Between 1982, when Teen Life opened, and 2004, Bamberg’s estimated pregnancy rate fell by nearly two-thirds among girls ages 15 to 19. The center provides sex-education classes, sessions to teach self-esteem and abstinence, guidance on contraception, and frequent public events, including offering free dinners to parents and kids.
