Direct Relief International, which distributes medical supplies to people in developing countries, held its annual “shareholder meeting” in Santa Barbara, Calif., where charity officials showed donors exactly where their money went in the past year, reports The New York Times.
Donors and watchdog groups praised the meeting as a way to allay the public’s mistrust of nonprofit activities by showing a commitment to accountability and disclosure. Such an event allows charities to develop interactive relationships with their donors, they say.
