Charity Shopping Malls: a User Guide

February 24, 2000 | Read Time: 1 minute

A new report helps non-profit organizations shop for an online charity shopping site.

Allison Schwein, a non-profit consultant in Sunnyvale, Calif., has published on her Web site a report, “Charity Shopping Portals,” that lists and compares more than 20 online shopping sites that allow shoppers to designate a portion of their purchases for charity.

The report explains how each site splits the affiliate fees it receives from retailers with participating charities and lists additional features that the sites offer, including the ability to accept online donations. It organizes the sites into categories, such as sites that will build custom shopping malls for charities and sites that cater to schools, churches, and small local groups.

Ms. Schwein also asked a test group of 29 volunteers to rate the sites. On a five-point scale, the testers judged the sites on their ease of use, privacy policies, appearance, and selection of retailers. Each site’s score is listed in the report.
