Charles and Margery Barancik, who gave millions of dollars to philanthropic causes primarily in Florida, died following a car crash in Sarasota, Fla., on December 18. An owner of a variety of manufacturing and other businesses in Chicago, Charles Barancik was 91, and Margery was 83. The couple endowed their foundation with a $100 million gift in 2014 and, through that, gave $50 million to a range of charities including the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Jewish Family Services, Planned Parenthood, and the Ringling College of Art and Design, among others.

Boy Scouts of America

Roger Mosby, who most recently ran his own executive-coaching consulting firm, has been appointed CEO and president. He follows Michael Surbaugh, who has retired after four years leading the scouting group.

Ford Foundation

Margot Brandenburg is joining the Ford Foundation as mission investments senior program officer. She is acting managing director of the impact investing team at the Rockefeller Foundation, and in 2015 she founded MyStrongHome in New York.

W.K. Kellogg Foundation

Robb Gray, vice president of policy and advocacy at Arnold Ventures, will now serve as the $8.6 billion Michigan grant maker’s director of policy advocacy.

More New CEOs

Bethia Burke, vice president of the Fund for Our Economic Future, has been promoted to president, effective in March. She succeeds Brad Whitehead, who became the grant maker’s first president in 2004.


Victoria Cataldo, director of philanthropy at the Masonic Care Community, has been appointed executive director of the Edwin J. Wadas Foundation.

Lynn Kelly, executive director of New Yorkers for Parks, will become executive director of the New York Restoration Project in February.

Ellen Leverich, associate vice president for development at the Bloomsburg U. Foundation, has been named vice president for college advancement at the State University of New York College at Geneseo and executive director of the Geneseo Foundation.

Gloria Perez will become president and CEO of the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota, effective February 17. Most recently she was president and CEO of the Jeremiah Program. She succeeds Lee Roper-Batker, who has retired after 19 years at the $26 million grant maker.

Ann Toback, a former labor lawyer and executive director of the Workers Circle for 11 years, has been promoted to CEO. The organization is also changing its name to the gender-neutral Workers Circle.


Other Notable Appointments

Mariama Grimes is now managing director of early learning at the United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. Most recently she was vice president of family and community engagement at the Public Education Foundation in Las Vegas.

Golden McCarthy, children’s program director at the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project, has been promoted to deputy director of this Arizona legal-aid group that works with migrants detained at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Joshua Rabin, a rabbi and senior director of synagogue leadership at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, has been promoted to senior director of teen engagement.

Scottie Williams Jr., accounting finance recruiter at Kelly Services, has been appointed director of alumni engagement at Elmhurst College. He graduated from the college in 2013.

Departure

Sanjay Bavikatte, executive director of the Christensen Fund since 2015, is departing.


Legacies

Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of the Bangladeshi nongovernmental organization BRAC, died on December 20 at age 83.

André Donikian, retired founder of the planned-giving and marketing firm Pentera, died on December 3. He was 76. In 2006, he won a Spirit of Philanthropy award from the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University for his work in the field of planned giving. Donikian was one of the founders of the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners.
