CHICAGO GARDENING PROJECT
February 17, 2006
Chicago foundations are joining forces to create a nonprofit organization that will provide agricultural jobs and training to people who have had difficulty finding employment, the Chicago Tribune reports. Windy City Harvest, led by the Steans Family Foundation and the Searle Funds at the Chicago Community Trust, would annually recruit 30 people, including ex-offenders, to grow and sell produce. The project requires a land transfer from the city and about $3.3-million for construction and operating costs. The organizers hope to begin the program by early 2007.
