Chicago Students Mete Out Grants From Laurene Powell Jobs Group

Chicago officials announced the recipients Sunday of $350,000 in child-safety grants allocated by six city college students at the behest of the philanthropic organization founded by Silicon Valley billionaire Laurene Powell Jobs, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

Twenty-three organizations working to make children’s lives safer in Chicago will receive funds through the “Peace Grant” effort, a collaboration between Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office and the Emerson Collective, the social venture led by Ms. Powell Jobs, the widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

The “youth advisory council” charged with steering the grants received 300 requests, with beneficiaries chosen based on the strength of their plans to give youth a role in making their communities safer, according to the Sun-Times. The recipients include Chicago-based nonprofits BUILD Inc., the Bella Cuisine Kids Cooking Club, and Just Christ Ministries.
