Child-Welfare Statistics Compiled by Charity

July 15, 1999 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Child Welfare League of America, in Washington, has created an on-line data base that provides statistics on the well-being of children in the United States.

Developed in coordination with state agencies that monitor child welfare, the data base currently provides state and national figures on child abuse and neglect. In coming months, the league will add information on deaths from child abuse and neglect, foster care, adoption, and support services provided to families.

Users select data by state — with the option of choosing neighboring states or states with similar numbers of residents — and they can also elect to have national statistics included in the tables. The site’s help section explains how to download information from the data base into a spreadsheet program.

Most of the information in the data base is for 1996, although some statistics are available for the years 1990 to 1995. By the end of this year, the league expects to have data for 1997, as well as some for 1998.

Thirty states have contributed $10,000 each to the data-base project and serve as co-sponsors.
