The Christian Coalition is suing the Internal Revenue Service in federal court for denying the organization’s application for tax-exempt status as an advocacy group last year (The Chronicle, July 15).
The group charged that the tax agency’s action was improper, unconstitutional, and arbitrary because the service has granted exemptions to “liberal” groups that engaged in similar kinds of activities.
“The I.R.S. has singled out the Christian Coalition and engaged in discriminatory action against the coalition because of the organization’s political views,” said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice, which represents the coalition.
