Churches Announce Immigrants Will Get Sanctuary

May 10, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

To bolster their advocacy on the behalf of immigrant families, churches in dozens of American cities will provide sanctuary to immigrants facing deportation, reports the Associated Press.

Modeled after a movement in Central America in the 1980s, the “new sanctuary movement” will house immigrants and protect them from arrest, reasoning that immigration agents will not violate traditional church autonomy in such matters.

The New Sanctuary Movement will eventually involve churches in more than 50 cities, the news service reported.
