COLLEGE ENDOWMENTS

January 23, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Savvy investments are helping to increase the gap between the nation’s wealthiest colleges and universities and other higher-education institutions, reports the Wall Street Journal and The Chronicle of Higher Education. Fifty-six colleges in North America have endowments worth more than $1-billion, which is nine more institutions than were that size a year ago, the Journal reports. Stanford University has been able to climb to No. 3 on the endowment list (just behind Harvard and Yale) in large part because of its investments in technology companies started by its alumni, the Journal notes.
