Comcast Largesse Goes to Lawmakers’ Charitable Causes

July 28, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Telecommunications giant Comcast has spread its philanthropy to organizations and causes favored by several members of Congress as its seeks approval for a proposed merger with Time Warner Cable, The Philadelphia Inquirer writes.

According to lobbying disclosures, Comcast has donated $1.64-million in the last two years to nonprofits affiliated with legislators or executive-branch officials, more than rivals Verizon, AT&T, and Time Warner combined. Charities and congressional caucuses linked to minority lawmakers have received particular support.

Watchdog groups have accused Comcast of using philanthropy to gain influence on Capitol Hill and with major organizations that serve minorities. The firm says its giving reflects longstanding charitable goals and is not aimed at soliciting support for its business agenda.
