Comedian’s Portrait Nets $50,000 for Charity on eBay

November 2, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

A painting that contains a portrait of the political satirist Stephen Colbert standing in front of a portrait of himself sold for $50,605 on the online auction site eBay to a restaurant chain owner, with the money going to charity, reports The Associated Press.

Chad Walldorf, owner of the Sticky Fingers restaurant chain, said he will hang the painting in the Sticky Fingers restaurant in Colbert’s hometown of Charleston, S.C. The money will be donated to Save the Children, in Westport, Conn.

“We don’t know much about art, but figured any time you can get two portraits for the price of one, then it must be a great deal,” Walldorf, 38, told the news agency.

A new portrait-within-a-portrait-within-a-portrait now hangs on the set of Mr. Colbert’s television show on Comedy Central, “The Colbert Report.”
