According to an annual survey conducted by the Committee to Encourage Corporate Philanthropy, U.S. businesses donated 14 percent more to charities in 2005 than in 2004, reports Reuters.

The report says that 91 companies together gave $10-billion last year, with more than $300-million of that figure donated by 86 companies for hurricane-relief efforts in the Gulf Coast region late last summer.

Additionally, 87 percent of the companies surveyed said they organize at least one formal volunteer program for employees, a finding that suggests a growing emphasis on the value of volunteering. Sixty percent of the companies offer recognition awards to employees, and nearly half offer paid time off for volunteer work.
