Company Helps Charities Use the Internet Effectively

July 30, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

A Seattle software company hopes to help charities take better advantage of the Internet.

Real Networks, which has developed software that allows audio and video signals to be broadcast over the Internet, has started a service called Real Impact. It is an expansion of the company’s “WebActive” site and officials hope that Real Impact will serve as a guide for charities to make effective use of the Internet.

Visitors can choose from five tutorial sections, including ones that deal with fund raising on line and managing on-line events. The fund-raising tutorial, for example, explains how the Rape Abuse and Incest National Network brought in $5,000 through the use of on-line videos by the singer Tori Amos.

Real Impact is also offering assistance with Internet technology, such as developing an on-line fund-raising plan or placing public-service advertisements on Web sites, for a fee. It says, however, that it will only work with groups it considers to be socially “progressive.” Charities it now works with include the Humane Society of the United States and the Environmental Defense Fund. Real Networks says that it only charges charities for the company’s own costs.
