Charities are increasingly being used as conduits by businesses and other donors seeking to influence lawmakers, reports The Boston Globe.
Some watchdog groups say they are so concerned about the potential for abuse caused by politically motivated donations that they are urging Congress to pass new restrictions on charities that lawmakers helped create.
The House voted last week to require public disclosure of all contributions made to charities controlled by members of Congress. Now some charity watchdog groups are asking the Senate to extend that approach to any nonprofit group founded by a member of Congress, even if the lawmaker says he or she did not control it.
