Conservationists Seek Protections for Whales
June 20, 2006
Shaken by a recent International Whaling Commission meeting in which pro-whaling nations won a majority, conservationists are asking governments to strengthen their efforts to protect those endangered animals, reports The Washington Post.
Japan led the whaling bloc in the fight against a moratorium on commercial whaling that was imposed in 1986. Despite the ban, several countries have continued to hunt the animals. Environmental groups, including Greenpeace and the Whaleman Foundation, are planning a new campaign to stir public concern, “Save the Whales, Again!,” reports the Post.
