Council on Foundations Releases Survey Results

Foundation Management Series, Ninth Edition
Volumes I, II, and III

Judith Kroll, Director of Research

This series from the Council on Foundations is intended to provide foundation board and staff members with the latest information and trends in such areas as investment practices, size and composition of governing boards, and grant monitoring and evaluation.

These volumes distill information culled from information foundations provided on their finances, governing boards, staff members, and grant-making guidelines.

The series drew 673 respondents out of 1,289 surveys sent. Although the funds that participated account for less than 2 per cent of all foundations, they held assets totaling $90.2-billion and made grants of $4.1-billion in 1996.

Volume I delineates the respondents’ finances, providing charts and summaries of the composition of assets (by percentage of domestic and foreign stocks, fixed income, cash, real estate, and other allocations), endowment-management practices, and administrative expenses for private funds.

Volume II focuses on the respondents’ governing boards, detailing their compositions by gender and race, providing information on pay and other compensation received by board members, presenting statistics on directors’ and officers’ liability insurance, and listing the percentages of funds that provide matching gifts for donations that board members have made to charities.

Volume III concentrates on human resources — numbers of staff members who work full-time, part-time, or as volunteers or interns — and grant making, exploring such topics as guidelines and applications, program-related investments, evaluation, and collaborations between funds.

Volume IV, which will provide information on staff-member salaries and foundations’ personnel policies, is expected to be released later this year.

For additional information on the series’ key findings, including reprints of survey data, see story on Page 37.
