Couple Arrested for Cell-Phone Charity Fraud

March 20, 2006

An Oklahoma couple charged with a $1-million charity scam were arrested while crossing into Canada from Washington state, the Associated Press reports.

Domingo and Heather Frias-Payan had operated Save a Life Give a Phone Foundation, in Oklahoma City, which collected cell phones to distribute to needy groups.

The Oklahoma attorney general’s office found last year that the couple gathered 100,000 phones, but gave only 300 of them to charities. Investigators believe the rest were sold for personal gain. The article did not include a comment from the couple.
