Couple Arrested for Charity Fraud
May 26, 2006
A couple in suburban Chicago who posed as military officials to sell raffle tickets to benefit a fake charity have been arrested, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.
Under the pretense of honoring Memorial Day, a former Navy Reservist, Anne Pellegrini, and her fiancé, Donald McCarver, told donors that proceeds from the raffle would go to the Navy/Marines Family Relief Fundraiser, a charity that supports needy military families. No such organization exists.
An investigation is under way to determine how much money the couple collected. The article did not include a comment from Ms. Pellegrini or Mr. McCarver.
