Crafting Statements to Show Donors Why They Should Give

July 25, 2002 | Read Time: 1 minute

Developing Your Case for Support
by Timothy L. Seiler

This guide provides tips and advice on how charities can draft a case for support, a statement that serves to “identify and express compelling reasons for people to give you money,” writes Mr. Seiler, director of the Fund Raising School at Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy, in Indianapolis.

The first part of the book provides worksheets and exercises designed to give an overview of how a charity’s staff members, board members, and volunteers can work together to develop an organization’s case for support. Subsequent chapters provide guidance on crafting a mission statement, defining goals and objectives, and organizing the financial information needed to establish why a project requires support.

The book also contains examples of letters, brochures, donor lists, and other materials that an organization may use to seek support.
