CVS Health Commits $100 Million for Community Wellness: Grants Roundup

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
CVS Health
$100 million over five years to Building Healthier Communities, which will make grants to community health and wellness organizations in the United States. The grants will be administered through the CVS Health Foundation and Aetna Foundation; CVS acquired Aetna in November.
Lilly Endowment
$48 million to 10 human-service organizations in Indiana to maintain their long-term financial sustainability. Among the grantees, Wheeler Mission Ministries received $10 million to operate its homeless shelter in Indianapolis.
W.P. Carey Foundation
$25 million to the Arizona State University Foundation toward a $50 million capital campaign for the W.P. Carey School of Business. Of the grant, $15 million will support career services and resources, and another $10 million will endow academic chairs to help the university recruit prominent professors and researchers.
Duke Endowment
$7 million challenge grant to Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, which will match private gifts to establish four endowed professorships.
William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
$2 million challenge grant to the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for its Cyber Policy Initiative, which aims to connect technological innovation and global public policies that govern the internet. (The Hewlett Foundation is a financial supporter of the Chronicle of Philanthropy.)
Hollywood Foreign Press Association
$2 million to InsideClimate News and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to provide legal services to protect First Amendment rights and support local and student journalists. Each news organization received $1 million.
Irene W. and C.B. Pennington Foundation
$2 million challenge grant to the Baton Rouge General Foundation for its Pennington Cancer Center. The foundation previously gave the hospital a grant to rename the cancer center in 2006.
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
$1.5 million to Boston Children’s Hospital to develop better gene-therapy treatments for sickle-cell disease and bring those treatments to developing regions of the world with high rates of the disease.
Moog
$1.5 million to the University at Buffalo’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to endow a professorship in innovation.
Laura and John Arnold Foundation
$1.3 million to Shatterproof to create a rating system for addiction and overdose treatments, which will help ensure people who are being treated for opioid use disorder receive appropriate medical care.
All Within My Hands Foundation
$1 million to 10 community colleges to bolster their career and technical-education certificate programs. This foundation was created in 2017 by members of the rock band Metallica.
E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company
$1 million to the Delaware Art Museum to give visitors free admission on Sundays.
New Grant Opportunities
The Arcus Foundation has issued a request for concepts for social-justice grants that prioritize the safety and social inclusion of LGBTQ people. A maximum of 30 grants, each worth up to $200,000 over two years, will be awarded this year. Projects must be conducted in the southern United States, with priority going to nonprofit organizations working in Arizona, California’s Central Valley, Florida, Georgia, New Mexico, and North Carolina. International grants are also available for work in East Africa and southern Africa, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Concepts are due January 22; full proposals are due March 6.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is soliciting proposals for grants through its Health and Climate Solutions program, which aims to enhance community health and well-being while also addressing climate change. Program areas include air quality, energy sources, transportation or mobility design, food and water systems, housing, and health systems. Proposals are due February 8.
