Attack Ad in Ala. Senate Race Targets Candidate’s Charity Pay: The ad, funded by backers of Sen. Luther Strange, cites the $1 million Roy Moore and his wife were paid over nine years as leaders of the Foundation for Moral Law, a Christian legal-aid group, the Associated Press reports. Mr. Moore, formerly Alabama’s top judge and a favorite of the religious right, is challenging Mr. Strange in the August 15 Republican primary.

General Motors Philanthropy Chief Steps Down: Jackie Parker resigned after less than two years heading GM’s foundation and its global-philanthropy division, The Detroit News writes. The automaker, which is revamping its $30-million-a-year grant program to focus on causes that align with its corporate mission, said Ms. Parker left to spend more time with her family in Atlanta.

NIH-NFL Research Pact Ends With Most of $30 Million Gift Unspent: The National Institutes of Health will let the five-year-old agreement expire this month despite $16 million remaining of the National Football League’s 2012 donation for brain-injury studies, according to ESPN. The NFL objected in 2015 to its grant dollars funding work by an NIH-selected scientist who had been critical of the league.

Sale of Boston Building Breeds Uncertainty for Dozens of Charities: Some 30 small social-service and advocacy groups have long paid below-market rates for offices at the Beacon Hill structure built by the American Congregational Association in 1898 to house its library, writes The Boston Globe. The association of Congregationalist churches is selling the building for $25.4 million.

Italy Seizes Volunteer Group’s Migrant-Rescue Boat: Authorities allege the vessel operated by German nonprofit Jugend Rettet has picked up migrants directly from smugglers’ boats off the coast of Libya, reports the Associated Press. As part of a crackdown on human trafficking, Italy is seeking to impose new restrictions on charity-run craft that aim to rescue imperiled migrants at sea.
