September 7, 2006
Dan Rather, former anchor of The CBS Evening News, and his wife, Jean, have given $2-million to Sam Houston State University, in Huntsville, Tex., reports the Associated Press.
The gift, the largest cash donation in the university’s history, will support scholarships and communications programs. Mr. Rather previously had established internships and scholarships at the university, and supported several academic programs.
Mr. Rather, a native of Houston, received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the university in 1953. He left the evening-news program in March 2005 after 24 years and will begin a news show on HDNet this fall.
