New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday named his wife, Chirlane McCray, as chairwoman of the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City, which raises private money to support a variety of City Hall-favored causes, reports The New York Times.
Mr. de Blasio said the position would be unpaid, and the appointment was cleared by the city’s Conflicts of Interest Board. “This had to be someone who was as close to the core of what we’re all about as humanly possible,” the mayor said, “I think we could safely say that no one could compete with Chirlane McCray on that particular score.”
Ms. McCray said the $37-million fund’s focus under her leadership would be on helping immigrant communities and children and families. During former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s terms it supported environmental, anti-poverty, public health, and youth programs.
