Democrats Will Ease Up on Charities, Executive Says

March 27, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

A leading nonprofit executive predicted that the Democratic majority in Congress will not seek new legislation to regulate the nonprofit field with the same fervor as Republicans have in recent years, reports The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Diana Aviv, head of Independent Sector, a Washington coalition of charities and foundations, says Democrats in the House and Senate do not see charity abuse as a priority for legislative action.

This approach contrasts with that of Sen. Charles Grassley, Republican of Iowa, who made nonprofit accountability his leading cause during his chairmanship of the Senate Finance Committee.

Ms. Aviv does expect the senator, who no longer chairs that committee, will push for new measures, but fewer than he has in the past.
