DISEASE OUTBREAKS

February 27, 2006

Larry Brilliant, who was appointed last week to head Google’s philanthropic arm, is creating an organization to improve detection of bird flu and other potential global-health crises, The Wall Street Journal reports. Google, Sun Microsystems, and the Omidyar Network, among other organizations, have expressed interest in supporting the group, which Dr. Brilliant says could be either for-profit or nonprofit. The project, tentatively named the International Networked System for Total Early Disease Protection, will cost $10-million in its early stages, according to Dr. Brilliant.
