Domingo Barrios, Chief Executive, Heifer Foundation

Background: Born in Panama, Mr. Barrios moved to the United States when he was 18 years old to attend college. His first job in the nonprofit world was as a case manager at a Houston charity that serves people with HIV/AIDS. More recently, he was a grants officer at the Houston Endowment and then the vice president for community investing at the Greater Houston Community Foundation. In 2008, he started a consulting business, the Nonprofit Coach, in Pearland, Tex.

Education: He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Creighton University, in Omaha, and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Colorado at Denver.

Why he was chosen: Vicki Bailyn, a Heifer board member, says when Mr. Barrios walked into the interview room, he brought “an energy, a warmth, something compelling that gets you to sit up and take notice.”

Why he took the job: He says he was attracted to the Heifer Foundation’s “bold and very aggressive mission to eradicate hunger and poverty and care for the earth.” The foundation raises money for Heifer International, the big aid charity.

Goals: To reach out more effectively to donors so they can see how supporting Heifer fits into their broader plans.


Salary: Mr. Barrios declined to disclose it.
