Donations From Union Dues No Longer Restricted

An agreement between the U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reached last week will allow state employees in Ohio to donate their union dues to any charity, not just a church, reports The Associated Press.
The settlement affects 37,000 workers, who can now give their union dues to other organizations.
Some workers said they didn’t want to support the union because they believed it was pushing legalized abortion and same-sex marriage. While the union allowed people with religious objections to divert dues to a religious congregation, they did not offer that option to people who didn’t belong to a formal religious institution.
Under the agreement, the union must offer the option of supporting a secular charity to workers who have religious objections to union policies.
