September 14, 2005 | Read Time: 7 minutes

United Ways across the country last year raised $4.04-billion

in donations from private sources, a gain of 0.4 percent from the previous year but not enough to match the 3.4-percent inflation rate. Fifty-six percent of the nation’s 1,326 United Ways increased their donations last year, compared with 42 percent that did so in 2003.

Following are the results from 426 United Ways that were supplied by United Way of America. The figures show money, products, and services raised from on-the-job drives, appeals to foundations, and other solicitations. They do not include money brought in from government grants.
