July 21, 2006
Robert W. Wilson, a former hedge-fund manager in New York, has offered four $100-million grants to four organizations, as long as they raise enough to match his pledge, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Mr. Wilson, who is 79 and worth at least a half-billion dollars, according to the newspaper, says he wants to give at least 70 percent of his fortune away before he dies.
The organizations Mr. Wilson wants to benefit from his $400-million pledge are: Environmental Defense, the Nature Conservancy, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the World Monuments Fund.
