A longtime donor has withdrawn a $12-million gift to the College of William & Mary because a brass cross has been removed from the institution’s chapel, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The removal of the cross was an effort by the college to welcome students of all faiths to the chapel, but it has stirred protest among students and alumni. The identity of the dissenting donor has not been disclosed. William & Mary is currently conducting a $500-million capital campaign, which is scheduled to close in June.
Says Gene R. Nichol, the president of the college: “Needless to say, the loss of any contribution—large or small—is a cause for concern, and we are not trying to sugarcoat this. We are hopeful that our donors and alumni, despite the current controversy, will be able to keep their eyes on the prize.”
