Donors Focus on Smaller, Local Charities

November 20, 2006

Donors are showing increasing interest in supporting small charities, those operating on an annual budget of $2-million or less, as their distaste for large charities beset by criticism and scandal in recent years has grown, reports The Washington Post.

Some smaller organizations are responding by producing annual guides to giving to local charities. Barbara Harman, head of her family foundation, published the fourth installment of the Washington area Catalogue for Philanthropy, featuring 70 to 80 charities.

“The large organizations feel very distant to many people, that’s what I hear,” Ms. Harman tells the Post.
