NEW BOOKS

Salsa, Soul, and Spirit: Leadership for a Multicultural Age — New Approaches to Leadership From Latino, Black, and American Indian Communities, by Juana Bordas, offers advice for nonprofit and community leaders. Advising a shift from an individualistic, competitive model of leadership, Ms. Bordas describes the traditions of “collectivism and generosity” among black people, Latinos, and American Indians and how to incorporate those traditions into leadership. The first of the book’s four parts discusses “the value changes that are necessary to create an environment in which inclusive and multicultural leadership can thrive.” The second section explores leadership styles, while the third part discusses ideas on community and interdependence. The final section encourages readers to support and lead multicultural organizations. The book incorporates anecdotes and tips from 11 community, government, activist, and nonprofit leaders in the United States, and each chapter ends with “next steps” that individuals and groups can take to integrate the lessons into their own practices. “An authentically multicultural society will fulfill the promise of democracy,” concludes Ms. Bordas.
