May 26, 2005 | Read Time: 1 minute

U.S. Philanthropic Commitments for HIV/AIDSsays that support for combating the disease grew by more than 30 percent from 2002 to 2003. While the overall amount contributed by grant makers is on the rise, support is coming from a smaller pool of grant makers, according to the report. It says that the 10 U.S. grant makers that gave the most in 2003 accounted for 83 percent of support for efforts to curb HIV/AIDS. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in Seattle, gave more than 50 percent of the total. The report, based on information from 170 grant-making organizations, also notes that a growing percentage of money is being used to fight the global AIDS pandemic. At least 78 percent of total grant dollars, or $308-million, went to global or international efforts, while just $51.9-million was committed to domestic HIV/AIDS programs.
