Enemies of Prostate Cancer Among 7 ‘Points of Light’

Following are the people and organizations that have most recently been named to receive President Clinton’s Daily Points of Light Award.

The Points of Light Foundation, a Washington charity, assists the President in making the choices and carrying out the award program. The recipients:

1503. YMCA at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, which organizes college students to recruit, train, and coordinate volunteer efforts in the New River Valley region, including after-school, mentor, and tutoring programs for children; a community garden; and volunteer opportunities during the spring recess.

1504. Alyson Cangemi, Ridgewood, N.J., a high-school student who worked with the New Jersey Organ and Tissue Sharing Network to raise awareness of the need for organ donation in her community through door-to-door visits and bringing guest speakers to her school.


1505. Michael Cash, La Jolla, Cal., a police officer who founded the “Law Enforcement and Parole” program to help future parolees prepare for life after their release from prison and to decrease tension between parolees and law-enforcement personnel.

1506. Orange County Volunteer Program, Santa Ana, Cal., designed by Jim Silva as a way to connect potential volunteers with county-government agencies that need help; the program has grown to 14,350 people who contribute more than 670,000 hours a year.

1507. Gregory Fainberg, Gaithersburg, Md., who volunteers daily at the Shady Grove Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, offering companionship to residents, running bingo games, and carrying out various tasks as needed.

1508. Patricia Mitchell, Dexter, Mich., who acts as a mentor in Washtenaw County’s Youth Companion Program to children referred by social workers; she has worked with one child for eight years, bringing the girl on family vacations and paying for her orthodontic braces.

1509. Warriors Against Prostate Cancer, Wilmington, Del., a group of black men working with Christiana Care Health Services to teach other black men about the importance of screening for prostate cancer, which disproportionately affects black males.
