Bill Greehey, chairman of Valero Energy, gave $25-million this month to the University of Texas Health Science Center to support children’s cancer research, days before he resigned from the company, reports The Express-News, in San Antonio.
Mr. Greehey’s gift, from his family foundation, is the largest private donation to the center, which will be renamed in his honor, the newspaper reported.
Mr. Greehey said he wants to spend more time on philanthropy, which he has stepped up in recent years.
In 2005 he gave $25-million to his alma mater, St. Mary’s University, the newspaper reports, and he appeared on The Chronicle’s list of the most-generous donors of that year.
