Ensuring Smooth Transitions in Organizational Leadership

May 27, 2004 | Read Time: 1 minute

Capturing the Power of Leadership Change: Using Executive Transition Management to Strengthen Organizational Capacity, by Tom Adams, discusses the challenges and opportunities associated with the departure of a current and the hiring of a new executive director. Mr. Adams, president and senior managing partner of TransitionGuides, a collaboration of consulting firms specializing in executive-transition management based in Silver Spring, Md., says that nonprofit organizations can take advantage of these transitions to re-examine their mission and practices. This guide describes how consultants have helped organizations seeking new managers and assisted board members in establishing orientation activities for new hires and setting up management-evaluation programs. This report was financed by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, in Baltimore, and the Evelyn and Walter Haas Jr. Fund, in San Francisco.
