Environmental Organization Votes to File for Bankruptcy

May 11, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

Environmental Careers Organization, a nonprofit group that has steered thousands of young people into jobs for the environment, has voted to file for bankruptcy in the midst of an investigation conducted by the U.S. attorney in Boston, reports The Boston Globe.

U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan has been investigating the nonprofit organization for two years over allegations that it misused government support for interns.

Jeff Cook, the organization’s founder, says government contracts permitted the group to keep extra money not spent on interns. The figure amounts to $1.8-million over eight or nine years, the newspaper says. The group says it has tried to settle the case with Mr. Sullivan, who did not comment for this article.

Mr. Cook says, “This is an organization that has been ruined, and they didn’t even talk to me.”
