Episcopal Health Gives $17 Million for Health-Care Access in Texas (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Episcopal Health Foundation

$17 million to community-based clinics in Texas to improve access to low-cost health care for poor people living in the state. Among the awards was a $1.5 million grant to Integral Care in Austin to pilot a sliding-scale payment model at two clinics in Travis County.

Juul

$7.5 million to Meharry Medical College to establish the Meharry Center for the Study of Social Determinants of Health, which will conduct research on the preferences for vaping compared with smoking cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and other nicotine consumption, particularly in minority communities.

William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trust

$5 million pledge to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts to increase the number of student scholarships it offers.

Rockefeller Foundation

$3.8 million to the Electricity Growth and Use in Developing Economies Initiative, a collaborative effort by the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Columbia University, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Colorado School of Mines to use data science to predict electricity demand in energy-poor emerging economies.


Walton Family Foundation

$3.5 million to NewSchools Venture Fund to create a competitive grants program to increase diversity among teachers of preschool through 12th grade.

PVH Corporation

$1 million to the onePULSE Foundation to help build the National Pulse Memorial and Museum, scheduled to open in 2022 to honor the 49 people killed in the 2016 shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Fla. The company owns the clothing brands Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, and Speedo.

New Grant Opportunities

The Kresge Foundation will award of a total of $3.6 million in grants through its Boosting Opportunities for Social and Economic Mobility for Families program. Partnerships between community colleges and human-services nonprofit organizations that connect low-income people in cities with services and educational opportunities may apply. Grants worth a maximum of $450,000 each will be awarded to up to eight partnerships. Applications are due July 26.

Ascendium Education Group is accepting concept papers for grants that will support the development or expansion of high-quality postsecondary education programs based in prisons. One-year planning grants of up to $150,000 will be awarded this fall; additional implementation grants worth up to $800,000 may be awarded to each successful program. Letters of interest are due August 1.
