May 9, 2007
The European Commission has given a $40.7-million donation to the United Nations World Food Programme to provide emergency money toward the relief efforts in the Darfur region of Sudan, reports Medical News Today.
The money will buy more than 38,000 tons of food for Darfur, much of which will have been produced locally. The food program anticipates as many as 2.8 million people may need food assistance before the annual harvest in October, the news service reports.
