Executive Leaves Two $26-Million Bequests

September 20, 2006

Syracuse University and Brown University each received $26.5-million from the estate of Frederic N. Schwartz, the former chairman and chief executive of Bristol-Myers, reports the Associated Press.

Mr. Schwartz graduated from Syracuse in 1931, while his wife, June, was a graduate of Brown. Mrs. Schwartz died this summer, and Mr. Schwartz died in 1995.

Both gifts will support student scholarships. The gift to Syracuse is the largest in the university’s history for student scholarship support, and will increase the portion of its endowment used for financial aid by 19 percent, the news agency reports.
