How much: $50-million

Who got it: Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Who gave it: The family of Alan Buerger, who founded Coventry, a life-insurance company in Fort Washington, Pa.

Where the money will go: To build the Center for Advanced Pediatric Care, which will be named after the family

Donors’ connection to the beneficiary: Reid Buerger, Alan’s son, became a trustee of the hospital last year.

How the gift came about: The Buerger family has used the hospital’s pediatric services, and several years ago Reid Buerger began talking to Steven Altschuler, the hospital’s chief executive, about making a gift. The hospital later suggested a gift of that size.

Impact of the gift: The money makes it possible to build a facility the hospital’s officials have discussed the need for over the past decade, based on talks with other medical institutions, says Stuart P. Sullivan, the chief development officer. The new center will offer treatments for sickle-cell anemia, cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, and other conditions.
