Family Pledges $20-Million to Jacksonville U.; Other Gifts

Two universities and a college will receive big gifts.

* The family of the late J. E. Davis, co-founder of the Winn-Dixie supermarket chain, has pledged $20-million to Jacksonville University, in Florida, for a new business school and to convert the current business school into a student union. The gift must be matched from other sources.

* Pennsylvania State University at Erie-Behrend Campus has received $20-million from an anonymous donor for its School of Business.

* An anonymous donor has given $10-million to Loras College, in Dubuque, Iowa, to establish a center for Catholic studies, to endow a professorship in Catholic thought, and for landscaping projects.

Baylor School (Tenn.): $5,000,000 from an anonymous donor for a new science and technology building.

California State U. at San Marcos: $1,900,000 bequest from the estate of Leonard Evers of Templeton, Cal., an accountant, for scholarships.

Claremont Graduate U. (Cal.): $1,000,000 from Ronald W. Burkle of Los Angeles, chairman of Fred Meyer Inc., for salaries for faculty members at the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management.

Cornell U. (N.Y.): $2,750,000 pledge from Bernard S. Yudowitz of Brookline, Mass., a physician, and his wife, Evelyn, for the Hillel Program for Jewish Campus Life.

Newberry College (S.C.): $7,000,000 from an anonymous donor for endowment. Northwestern U. (Ill.): $2,000,000 from Stanton R. Cook of Kenilworth, Ill., retired chairman of the Tribune Company, to establish a professorship in engineering design, and a $2,000,000 charitable remainder unitrust from Robert J. Fierle of East Aurora, N.Y., chairman of American Precision Industries, to reconstruct the Technological Institute.


Ohio Wesleyan U.: $1,000,000 from Evelyn Kubach of Largo, Fla., an investor, for scholarships.

Pasco-Hernando Community College (Fla.): $1,500,000 bequest from the estate of Rose L. Case of Bayonet Point, Fla., a retired buyer for a department store, for unrestricted use.

Rollins College (Fla.): $1,000,000 from Dennis Harward of St. Cloud, Fla., president and chief executive officer of HTE Inc., a software company, for the Executive Education Center and to create a center for entrepreneurship at the Crummer Graduate School of Business.

Siena U. (N.Y.): $1,000,000 bequest from the estate of Charles A. MacClosky of Santa Monica, Cal., an engineer who owned five building and road-construction firms, for scholarships.

Texas Tech U.: $1,000,000 from Gary Petersen of Houston, a managing director of EnCap Investments, for the College of Business Administration.


Timothy Christian Schools (Ill.): $1,000,000 from an anonymous donor for endowment and scholarships at this pre-kindergarten-through-12th-grade school owned and operated by parents.

Tufts U. (Mass.): $1,250,000 from Ethel Jafarian, an investor, for a professorship in Armenian studies.

U. of California at Los Angeles: $2,500,000 bequest from the estate of Ann Rosenfield of Beverly Hills, Cal., an investor, for an addition to the Darling Law Library and to construct the Arthur Ashe Student Health and Wellness Center, and $1,000,000 from Gregg Juarez of Rancho Mirage, Cal., an artist and owner of several art galleries in southern California, for the Seeds University Elementary School, the laboratory school of the School of Education.

U. of Illinois: $6,000,000 from Al Wohlers of Park Ridge, Ill., who runs an insurance agency, and his wife, Jane, to reconstruct the Commerce West building at the Urbana-Champaign campus; 378 prize Angus cattle valued at $3,100,000 from Gerald Forsythe of Inverness, Ill., chief executive officer of the Indeck Group of Companies, for the cattle programs at the College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences at the Urbana-Champaign campus; and $1,000,000 from William Merchantz of Wheaton, Ill., president and chief executive officer of Lakeview Technology, for a new basketball facility at the Chicago campus.

U. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: $1,000,000 from an anonymous donor for the College of Arts and Sciences.


U. of North Texas: $2,000,000 from Bill Winspear of Dallas, chief executive officer of Associated Materials, and his wife, Margot, for the College of Music.

Walt Disney Company Foundation (Cal.): $2,000,000 from Paul Kariya of Anaheim, Cal., a member of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks professional hockey team, to be dispersed among 30 charities in Orange County, Cal. The amount represents the salary that Mr. Kariya deferred when he was injured this season.

Westmont College (Cal.): $5,000,000 from a family wishing to remain anonymous, for capital needs.
