FDA Fines Red Cross Over Blood-Safety Rules
November 29, 2006
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has given the American Red Cross until mid-December to report on how the charity intends to comply with federal requirements concerning blood safety, according to the Associated Press.
The agency fined the Red Cross $5.7-million recently for violating blood-safety rules and failing to comply with a 2003 agreement to correct such practices.
Red Cross officials have asked for an independent assessment of how the organization complies with federal requirements, and said the organization would draft a new plan to comply with the rules.
