Federal Agency Clears Way for University

August 22, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers issued a wetlands permit to Ave Maria University and its town, both established by Tom Monaghan, the philanthropist and founder of Domino’s Pizza, and Barron Collier Cos., clearing the way for construction to begin, reports the Naples Daily News, in Florida.

Mr. Monaghan moved the Catholic university and law school from Ann Arbor, Mich., to Immokalee, Fla., this year because Michigan residents were upset by the philanthropist’s support of anti-abortion groups. (Read a profile of Mr. Monaghan in The Chronicle of Philanthropy. )

The effort to build the university has attracted a lot of controversy. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Mr. Monaghan discussed the battle over the university as well as as his philosophy of giving. (A paid subscription is required to view this article.)
