Federal Agents Raid Texas Charity

May 11, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Federal investigators raided the office of the National Center for the Employment of the Disabled, in El Paso, Tex., on Tuesday, seizing documents and computer data for a criminal investigation of the charity’s former president, Robert E. Jones, reports The Oregonian, in Portland. The group has been a major recipient of federal funds for programs that help the disabled, attracting more than $1-billion in grants over 10 years, the newspaper says.

Mr. Jones is being investigated by three federal agencies to determine if he made false claims on federal paperwork to qualify for grants, the newspaper said, as well as whether he used the charity’s money for personal use. Mr. Jones declined to comment on the allegations, but the current president of the charity said he will cooperate with the investigation.
