Federal Cuts Hurt Arts Programs for the Disabled

Arts programs for the disabled are floundering since losing federal funds, The New York Times reports.
Cultural-education projects for the disabled were receiving $2-million a year in federal money, the paper says. But in December 2004, those funds were apparently cut out of the federal budget. The reason behind the cut is not yet known. But members of Congress say they are now looking into ways to restore the money.
The situation has become dire for some charities, including the National Theatre of the Deaf, in West Hartford, Conn., whose executive director has taken a pay cut and assumed janitorial duties to keep the group from going under.
