Avoiding Trouble While Doing Good: A Guide for the Non-Profit Director and Officer, by Jack B. Siegel, is a set of two CD-ROM’s that describes various financial and legal issues facing nonprofit board members and officers. The guide is designed to help people decide if they are well suited for volunteer board service, as well as to help them understand and analyze financial statements, comply with federal and state reporting requirements, and obtain insurance for their organizations. Mr. Siegel, chief executive officer of Audio Didactix, an organization in Chicago that develops educational software, presents eight scenarios to help users contemplate their responsibilities as board members. For example, in one simulation, a mayor asks a charity to forgo part of its exemption on paying property taxes. The discs include video and audio clips, IRS forms, and information on some court decisions.
